Benefits of Ear Seeds

Many of my patients end up leaving my office with ear seeds. People often ask about the tiny band aids in their ears and patients joke about getting their ear pierced. But actually, those little band aids are a form of take home acupuncture.

Auricular Acupuncture

Auricular (ear) acupuncture involves stimulating acupuncture points in the ears. Ear seeds are an easy, non-invasive way to stimulate those points. Tiny black seeds from a Vaccaria plant are attached to adhesive and used on specific points to help with a myriad of health issues. The seeds themselves have healing properties, like helping to move blood and invigorate channels. Therefore, when applied to specific acupuncture points they will help your immune system balance and repair the body by removing blockages that cause pain and keep the body from healing optimally.

How does stimulating a point on my ear help my immune system heal my body?

Our body is full of redundant or repetitive systems so that it can survive and adapt to the world. A trained acupuncturist is able to observe these repetitions through pulses, tongues, ears, hands, feet, and many more indicators. For this discussion, we are focusing on ears. The ears mirror everything that is going on in the body at the specific time of treatment. Long standing issues manifest in the ear with the most notable visible signs. Visible blood vessels are indicative of chronic stagnation due to an injury of some sort that did not heal as well as it should have. The darker these blood vessels the more severe the stagnation. When I observe an indention on the outer ear, it tells me about some sort of underlying deficiency. When a point is swollen it shows me that there is an excess or inflammation in an area. By placing seeds on these points, it helps to bring balance to the body and allow for relief of pain.

But how does my ear tell my body to heal?

The ear is one of the most studied aspects of Chinese medicine. These studies have shown that the ear contains thousands of nerve endings most which terminate at acupuncture points. Each nerve ending connects to a nerve that goes into the brain and controls the corresponding part of the body. As an example, the point on your ear for the hip goes into the brain at the same location that controls your hip. So, by stimulating the hip point on your ear, we stimulate your brain’s hip nerve. This causes your brain to trigger a healing response to both the ear and the hip and pain is reduced.

What are ear seeds used for?

Ear seeds can be used to help treat any condition in the body. The military uses auricular acupuncture in what has been termed “battlefield acupuncture.” It is literally used in the battle field to help ease the pain from injuries until a soldier can get back to base. It is also being used in clinics to help reduce dependency on pain medications and other drugs using what is referred to as the NADA protocol. Many acupuncturists, like myself use auricular therapy to help strengthen and prolong the treatment.

I personally studied under Dr. John Hsu who was a student of Dr. Lichun Huang who is recognized as the world’s top expert in the field of auricular medicine. It’s a fascinating healing modality that is extremely effective and can be used on children and adults.

Temperature Matters

We often hear patients saying, “I eat healthy, but I still can’t lose weight” or “I don’t understand why I’m so tired all the time”. While there can be many answers to those questions that are individual to the patient, there is one thing that plays a major role for all of us. It’s a simple concept, but one that most of us never consider…yes, the type of food we eat is important – we all understand that we won’t lose weight eating donuts and pizza all day. But just as important as our food choices is our food TEMPERATURE.

I am an Acupuncturist, so I look at our bodies from a different perspective. I look at subtle things. We must understand how temperature effects our bodies. When our bodies heat up, our muscles warm up, our pores open, we sweat. We react this way because the heat causes our blood vessels to open, it loosens our muscles and gets us moving. Conversely, when it is cold outside we slow down (as anyone who has been in the north in the middle of winter can attest to), the cold causes constriction. Our bodies tighten up and we want to curl into a ball for warmth. Our pores close, our skin is pale and blood flow slows down as the blood vessels and muscles constrict.

Okay, Brian, we get it…heat warms and loosens the muscles, cold constricts. What does this have to do with food?

Our stomach and intestines are lined with blood vessels that allow for the absorption of nutrients. When we consume a food or drink that is hot, the blood vessels dilate and allow for a greater absorption of the nutrients, as well as an easier digestive process. If we drink or eat something that is cold, the blood vessels of the digestive system are going to contract, or get smaller, thus absorbing less nutrients and making the digestive process more difficult. So, when we drink something ice cold before we eat or with our meal, we cause the blood vessels of our digestive system to get smaller and decrease our ability to absorb the nutrients from our food. This idea tells us that we should not drink cold things with our food or with our supplements. This is also the reason that traditional herbal medicine is taken in the form of hot teas and decoctions. Heat = expansion, easier digestion and allows us to absorb nutrients better. Cold = constriction, sluggish digestion, and limits our ability to absorb nutrients.

Let’s think of our stomach like a stockpot on the stove. If we want to cook pasta, we put cold water in the pot, maybe add some salt. We place the pot on the stove and turn the burner to high heat. Once the water is boiling, we add the pasta. Now the water temporarily stops boiling, but, fairly rapidly, it begins to boil again and the pasta cooks properly in several minutes. Okay, now let’s vary that. If we put the pasta directly in the pot with cold water and then place it on the stove, the water will take longer to boil, our pasta will be mushy, clumped together and not cooked properly. Now let’s go a step further…we have the pot of cold water with pasta in it sitting on the stove top, but we forget to turn the heat on. The pasta will never cook and will eventually turn into a starchy mess. See where I’m going with this? Our bodies use energy to digest food. Our stomach is the stockpot. When we eat food, we need to eat warm/hot temperature foods and drinks first to help our body “heat up” the stockpot. Then we can eat the cooler temperature foods. This will help the entire digestion process and allow us to actually receive nutritional benefits from our food. When we eat warm/hot foods first, we give our stomach energy in the form of heat to help it digest and break down food. If we are only eating cold and cool foods we will notice that we often feel tired and sluggish as our body needs to focus more energy on heating the stock pot.

So, for today, instead of having ice water, a salad, and a cold sandwich for lunch, start with warm soup or tea and THEN eat the salad or sandwich. Make this simple change and watch how your body adjusts and repays you with more energy and vitality. And, I know we all love our iced drinks…but do not have them immediately before, during, or after your meal. Trust me on this one…your stomach will thank you!

All-Natural Bug Spray Alternatives

When we moved to Northwest Georgia from Florida, I was so excited to escape the tourists, the humidity, and the mosquitoes. As summertime approaches, however, I see that escaping the mosquitoes isn’t going to happen and as much as I am in love with the mountains, the shades of green, and the people here…the mosquitoes are still buzzing. So, it’s time to pull out my essential oils and other tricks to keep them away from us.

When it comes to DIY projects, I’m really not that girl, but making my own bug spray is so easy and way less expensive than buying the pre-made natural products at the store. And while I’m not perfect when it comes to holistic choices, all-natural bug spray is one of those things that I insist on for our kids and our dog. Here are a few simple things you can start doing right away…don’t worry, this is an easy one, I promise!

  • Fire – Brian and I are both Sagittarians so this is our favorite! When you are going to be outside in the evening, make a ring of candles (any scented candle will do, but ultimately Citronella is best) around the table, make a fire in your fire pit, or spend a few dollars on some tiki torches and create a mosquito-free perimeter. Obviously, you’ll want to make sure that the you follow all your fire safety rules, but the smoke will repel the mosquitoes and there’s something so magical about sitting around the fire on a summer night.
  • Garilc –garlic actually DOES repel vampires (at least the flying, buzzing ones that are invading my backyard). Start adding more garlic to your diet and you will find that you are way less tasty to the blood sucking little nuisances. You can also add some Apple Cider Vinegar to your diet (and your dog’s water bowl) as another internal repellant.
  • Essential oils or herbs – use any or all of the following in lieu of DEET and other toxic ingredients. They are just as effective and have none of the side effects.

Lavender, peppermint, spearmint, vanilla, lemon eucalyptus, geranium, rosemary, citronella.

Personally, I am not a fan of geranium or citronella so I will only use those if I know I will need the big guns. Feel free to experiment with your own blend, but this is my favorite:

30-40 drops each oil (I’m a rebel when it comes to following recipes so I tend to just put in “some”. For example, I like peppermint oil because it also helps me stay cool, so I go heavy on it)

Peppermint Oil

Lemon Eucalyptus Oil

Lavender Oil

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tbs rubbing alcohol

½ cup witch hazel

½ cup water or vinegar (you can use apple cider vinegar but honestly, I just can’t stand the smell)

Place all the oils and vanilla in a spray bottle and add the alcohol. Shake very well to combine.

Add the witch hazel and shake again (there will be a lot of shaking).

Add the water and shake again (see?).

This mixture will separate so you will need to shake vigorously each time you use it.

If you are unfamiliar with any of the oils, I highly recommend smelling them BEFORE you buy them and make a huge batch of this stuff. Being mosquito free is awesome, but not if you are stuck smelling like a geranium flower and you can’t stand the smell of it. And remember that a little bit goes a long way. You don’t need to soak yourself, just spray a little on your clothes and mist your body. And, definitely, do not spray in your mouth or eyes!

Top 5 Treatments for Sleep Issues

Sleep disorders and overall trouble with sleep are a big concern for SO MANY of us. With common triggers like stress, sugar, alcohol, anxiety, and nasal congestion, it’s one of the most common health issues that drastically affects a person’s quality of life.

At Hornburg Holistics, we use an integrative holistic approach to health care. Many of our top requested treatments are highly effective for improving sleep quality among our clients. If you suffer from any kind of sleep disorder or disruption, call us to book one or more of these treatments and be on the quick road to relief!

  1. Acupuncture – Treatments works to re-balance meridians running through the body that are responsible for regulating your circadian rhythms to improve the length, depth, and quality of your sleep.
  2. Music Therapy – Using a combination of relaxation techniques, biofeedback, instrument playing, guided imagery, emotional expression and more, music therapy sessions often yield dramatic improvement in sleep duration, help reduce the time it takes to fall asleep, and reduce sleep disruption (such as waking up in the middle of the night).
  3. Lymphatic Drainage Massage – This gentle massage therapy is both relaxing and beneficial for sleep. If your sympathetic nervous system (responsible for the “fight or flight” response) is overstimulated from constant stress and anxiety, you may have significant trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Lymphatic drainage massage works to manually detoxify the body and release congestion to quiet down the activity of the sympathetic nervous system and let the body relax.
  4. Lymphatic Drainage Facial – Offering the same benefits as the lymph massage, a lymphatic facial specifically helps drain the sinuses, allowing for deep and clear breathing, and therefore, better quality sleep. A lymphatic drainage facial might even make you fall asleep during the session! Ahhh, sweet relaxation. This technique offers bonus benefits of a reduction in under-eye and overall facial puffiness.
  5. Life Coaching – Dedicated to helping you improve your overall health and happiness, a life coaching one-on-one session can narrow a focus to sleep and help identify any lifestyle choices or stress triggers that are standing in your way to a great night of rest. A life coach helps connect and correct imbalances between your emotional, physical, and spiritual sides to ease pain, relieve stress, promote happiness, and get the rest you deserve.

Stay Healthy the Holistic Way

Stay Healthy the Holistic Way

injection pic
Americans spend over $373 BILLION (yes, that’s BILLION) dollars every year on drugs. On legal drugs. That number is staggering and it increases year after year. We’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, so we’re looking for something…anything…that will make us feel better. And the commercials that we are inundated with claim that pharmaceuticals are the magic bullet. But here’s the catch: those side effects that they rattle off at the end of the commercial. The side effects that keep us stuck on a hamster wheel of pills.side effects of hydrocodone

And yet, we’re still sick. The magic bullet is making pharmaceutical companies lots of money, but it doesn’t seem to be helping us at all. So what can we do?
In ancient times, patients would pay their physician every month to keep them HEALTHY and payment would stop if a sickness occurred. Can you imagine what our healthcare system would look like if we adopted this outlook? What would happen if we shifted our attention from taking drugs to mask our symptoms and really started looking at the root of our problems?
Holistic Medicine is designed to be preventative…it helps keep our bodies in balance so we are able to stay healthy and happy. Keeping our immune systems strong is imperative and many times the drugs we are taking to make us “healthy” actually weaken the immune system and make us more susceptible to dis-ease. Here are some excellent options:
1) Acupuncture: this ancient modality stimulates certain points on the body and helps bring the physical, mental and emotional bodies into balance. Acupuncture is hugely beneficial for pain management, anxiety, stress…all the things that can weaken our immune system and increase our chances of getting sick. This treatment can be highly beneficial as the seasons are changing or your stress is increasing.

2) Lymphatic Drainage: The lymph fluid circulates infection fighting white blood cells, which help you avoid infection and sickness, as well as create antibodies so your body can respond to invaders better in the future. It also collects extra fluid from the body and filters the waste, toxins, and excess hormones from it by sending those things to the lymph nodes to be destroyed. It’s proper circulation and functioning is extremely important to keeping you healthy. And the best way to circulate the lymph? A lymphatic drainage massage, which feels GREAT.

3) Massage Therapy: We all associate massage with relaxation, but did you know that it can also help boost the immune system? Massage increases number of lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that play a large role in defending the body from disease, researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles tell us.

4) Counseling or Life Coaching: Anxiety, depression, stress, anger all play a significant role in weakening our immune system. Having a safe, effective, healthy strategy for coping with our emotions is one of the best defenses against pain and illness.victory

This list is not comprehensive…there are so many ways to help yourself feel better that do not include hopping on the pharmaceutical hamster wheel. Step outside of the box…try something different. If your doctor hands you a prescription, ask her if there is a holistic alternative. Sometimes it can be that simple.
And guess what the side effects are to all of the modalities listed above? You feel fabulous! Now that’s a plan I can get on board with.

Relieve Your Pain with New Avazzia Treatments

In recent weeks, Hornburg Holistics began working with NextGenTens to offer an exciting new device called Avazzia to our clients.

Avazzia is a hand-held high-tech pain management device that uses patented BEST (Biofeedback Electro-Stimulation Technology) to produce micro-current electrical impulses that interact with your body’s nervous system using electrodes placed on your skin. The device quickly relieves pain (lasting up to 12 hours or more), reduces inflammation, smooths and improves scar tissue, and offers lasting results. It works naturally by gently stimulating your body’s ability to resolve pain without drugs or surgery, not just put a band-aid over it. This new technology is both convenient and effective and is also FDA approved for pain relief!

Avazzia CEO Tim B. Smith invented the device in 2004. In earlier years, Tim worked as an engineer for Texas Instruments, engineering technology used in F-14/F-15 military jets,  micro-technology for the telecom industry, and the chips used to create the first Apple and IBM computers.

If you’re dealing with any chronic or acute pain, we promise you’ll want to try out Avazzia and add it to your routine holistic care at The Wellness Center of Sanford. Avazzia can help with pain relief for a huge variety of pain issues including, but not limited to:
